Castors

Castors are components which are fitted to appliances, etc.to make them mobile. Generally, castors are not directly driven & are, therefore, designed for low speeds only. The appliances are mostly pulled or pushed manually or moved by means of a tractor.

A castor consists of a bracket & at least one wheel. As a basic principle, a distinction is mode between swivel castors & fixed castors.

Swivel Castors

swivel castors & vertically rotatable & make appliances, etc. maneuverable. A fork (swivel fork) is fitted to the top plate of a swivel bearing (swivel head). The fitting element is firmly fixed to the appliance while the fork remains rotatable. To enable a smooth swivel motion of the fork the wheel is generally fitted with a horizontal distance between the axis of the swivel bearing & the wheel.

This distance is called offset & correctly dimensioned, allows a smooth swiveling of the castor without additional tools as will as directional stability. Swivel castors can be equipped with brake system to lock:

  • the rotary motion of the wheels (wheel brake),
  • the rotary motion of the wheel and the swivel motion of the Fork (wheel and swivel brake)

Fixed castors

Fixed castors provide directional stability for, appliances, etc.& cannot be swiveled. Generally top plates have proven to be the most frequently used fitting elements.
